Symmetry was one of the topics this week.  We discussed the different things in nature that have symmetry—point some out when you are out and about this weekend.  We also worked on writing the numbers.  We start all numbers (and letters) at the top—if you see your child starting from the bottom and going up, a gentle reminder to start at the top would be great!
Red Ribbon Week is Next Week

Don’t forget that next week is Red Ribbon Week to promote being drug free.  Below are the themes for each day.  Please know that we need to refrain from wigs, painted hair, painted faces, or hats.

Monday – “You Stay Strong and Healthy”--Wear a jersey or your favorite team shirt. Tuesday – “You Look and Feel Better”--Dress like a music or movie star. Wednesday – “You Show Good Character”-- Wear Red to show you “can” say NO to drugs.  *Bring a can or non-perishable food item to school.    Thursday – “Your Future is Brighter”--Wear bright colorful clothing. Friday – “You Make Your School and Family Proud”--Wear Purple and Gold Norwalk Warrior clothing.
Notes…
  • Friday, Oct. 29 is our walking field trip to the Norwalk Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.  Please have your child wear comfortable walking shoes (no sandals/flip flops please).  Our group will be leaving Oviatt around 11:40 to arrive there by 12:00.  We made our “Boo” glasses this week and I can’t wait to see them all decked out next week.  REMEMBER—NO COSTUMES!!
  • Please remember when you are dropping off or picking up, you need to park in a parking spot if you intend to leave your vehicle.  PLEASE don’t leave your vehicle unattended in the drop off lane.

Math We touched on estimation this week in math.  We talked about how we want to make a smart guess when we estimate and not give any “wild” guesses.  We also just started simple addition stories.  These are things you can do at home with your child.  Ask them things like, “I wonder how many grapes are in this bowl?” or “There are 2 squirrels running in our yard, 2 more just ran up the tree, how many squirrels are there in our yard?”
WeatherWith the temperature starting to cool down, please make sure to send a sweatshirt or jacket with your child.  We have a morning recess and often it is still pretty chilly when they go out.  With this weather, kids will need to zip, fasten, etc.  Please work with your child so that they can get ready for recess independently (putting coats on, zipping, how to pull sleeves right-side out).  All of these are things I tend to take for granted with my own at home, but when I get 21 of them in my classroom, there are never enough hands.  Thanks for your help!

  • Don’t forget to check out the film canister that goes home on Friday for a little snippet of our book of the week.  Please make sure to return the film canisters on Monday.  Thanks!
  • Ask your child about our jack-o-lantern glyphs.
  • Be sure to check out our Shutterfly site for some great pictures and a short video from this week.

  Math
We have been working on those tricky teen numbers this week.  If you are looking for some math activities to do with your child, running through those numbers (both identification and having your child “build” that number) would be great!
Lunch
We LOVE to have visitors for lunch!  Please make sure you call the office that morning and let them know if you are eating the school lunch.  We’ve been off on our lunch counts for students because kindergarten has visitors that are not notifying the school.  (With e-mail trouble here and there, the best way is to call Karin in the office 981-1005).  Thanks!

Math We have been doing a lot of work this week with counting and patterns.  Point out patterns that you see around when you are out and about.  Pointing out numbers would also be a great way to reinforce number recognition.  The next time you are at a store, point out the prices of items, point out house numbers, etc.Be sure to check out our Everyday Math website for on-line games. In a web browser - such as Internet Explorer, Firefox, or Safari - go to the Everyday Math Online home page at https://www.everydaymathonline.com. You may wish to save this address as a “favorite” or “bookmark” in your browser.  Your child’s password is taped in the inside of their take home folder.  You can also access this site through our website, under student links.
Book ItI am sending home the first class reading log today.  This is a separate reading incentive and not related to the Go Bananas Reading incentive through the library.  If you want to participate, please record 10 additional book titles on the sheet and return for a Pizza Hut pizza certificate.  You will find more information about this incentive attached to this e-mail.

Notes…

Don’t forget that Friday, Sept. 24th is our Grandparent’s Day celebration!!  Please have your child’s guest report through door number 1 by the office and sign in to get a visitor sticker.  We will have a lot of guests joining us that day and want to make sure that all students are safe, so guests still need to sign in at the office!  Remind them to bring a favorite book to share with their child!  Unless I receive your child’s permission slip to leave early, they will be dismissed as usual!

We are looking for families to help donate snack for our special day.  If you are able to help us out, please e-mail me so I can let you know what to bring.  We have severe peanut allergies within our groups participating and will have a specific snack so all children can enjoy the day.

It’s Friday, so we sent another of the film canisters home today.  Please take the little slip of paper out and the little bus and have your child tell you about the things listed on the paper.  Don’t forget to return the film canister on Monday!!

Have a great weekend!

Our website has been having some trouble with the links.  I apologize for the trouble!  We are working with the company to figure out what’s going on, but until then, bear with us!  The calendar link and the student links seem to be in working order, so keep using those!

By the way, we have a graphing question every day and today the question was “Who will win the BIG game this weekend?”  The total was 17 for the Hawkeyes (Yea HAWKS!) and 4 for the Cyclones (sorry ISU fans!).  J  We’ll see how accurate our cherubs are!

Have a great weekend!

A note from 9/3/10

Hello All!  We’ve survived the first FULL WEEK of Kindergarten!  Thankfully we have a 3-day weekend because if your child is anything like mine at home, they are TIRED!  We’ve been busy learning the Warrior Way this week which is how to be Responsible, Respectful, and Safe in our district!

We’ve also had fun this week with author, Eric Carle.  He is such an amazing author/illustrator and if you haven’t had a chance to enjoy any of his books at home, you need to check his books out.  We even dabbled with some Eric Carle Art today.  As I am typing this, I am crossing my fingers that they are dry enough for the journey home.  If not, expect your masterpiece on Tuesday!

Just some quick notes…the office has mentioned that they have not received proof of birth for many of our kindergartners.  If you haven’t had a chance to send that in for your child, please contact Karin Stewart at the office with questions.

I also sent home a half sheet with information on our class-wide behavior plan.  I am hoping that this will be a good visual for kids to help with making good choices while honoring those that do make good choices!  You will see a hot pink calendar in your child’s folder.  I will try my best to mark down a color for the day.  Please see the note for more details.  This plan may phase out as it is not needed anymore!

I have extended the book orders until next week, so please either send in the paper copies or complete your order on-line by next Wednesday.

Have a wonderful 3-day weekend!  Don’t forget school pictures on Friday!

A note from 8/27/10

Congratulations!  You survived the first week of kindergarten!  We had a fun week getting to know each other, learning the in’s and out’s of school, and establishing a bit of a routine.  I look forward to next week and the chance to get to know our friends even more as well as getting used to a FULL day of kindergarten!

A quick note…if you didn’t get a chance to sign up for conferences during Open House, please call Karin, our secretary, to set up a time.

Also…thank you to those families that were able to send in a snack already this week.  Please try to send in a snack next week with your child.  Please attach the snack coupon that is taped inside their purple folder.  Thanks so much!

Have a wonderful weekend and remember that next week students are dismissed at the normal 2:50 time!
